i find this incredibly interesting as i studied quite a bit of dutch art, in particular dutch/netherlandish landscapes, in college. i responded much more strongly to vermeer's light than paintings of boats on calm twilight seas back then, but this aperture exhibit has reawakened my interest in these landscapes. it makes me question the idea of time in the beauty of landscape art: are these new works as beautiful as albert cuyp's harbor paintings of the 17th century? does the modernization you see in the new works make the work impossible to be beautiful? i think the new works are as 'beautiful' as one's opinion of seeing the new york city skyline. if you can marvel at modernization/if you can appreciate beauty in man-made landscapes then yes. i happen to be one of those kinds of people; who can find serenity in chaos, as well as the curiosity of man vs. nature and its translation into our landscapes.
Aelbert Cuyp: Gezicht op Dordrecht (ca. 1660)
i'd like to check out this show when i'm back in the city.

There's a really interesting book about these things called The American Technological Sublime by a Danish scholar! Think Niagara falls, railroads and Moon rockets.
